Injection moulding references

The fibres make UPM Formi silky soft and warm to the touch. This is an advantage in many applications, such as kitchen equipment. As UPM Formi is suitable for injection moulding, it can be used in objects of all shapes.

UPM Formi has already been used as a substitute for traditional raw materials from plywood to plastics. It has been used in a range of different products, from furniture to kitchen and table ware, small electronics and kitchen structures.


Injection moulding user cases

​UPM Formi is used in Isku's Prima Series school chairs.

The product itself is more than ten years old and it is a staple piece of furniture in Finnish schools. The production of the chair was going to end before discovering UPM Formi because it was made of plastic.

Buyers like the ecological value that UPM Formi offers. They really like the fact that there is wood fibre in the plastic, which gives it that soft feel.



Tregren, a Finnish company, introduced in 2013 more sustainable way of growing lettuce and herbs indoors. The Genie kitchen garden is based on hydroponics and uses the UPM ForMi biocomposite developed by UPM. Hydroponics and adequate lighting allow the plants to grow up to three times faster than plants grown in a traditional flowerpot.

UPM Formi was selected for the garden base mainly for environmental reasons. With UPM Formi, half of the oil-based, non-renewable raw materials could be replaced with natural renewable wood fibres that come from sustainably managed forests.

At the end of its lifecycle, the kitchen garden can be burned and used as an energy source; a highly sustainable approach. The biocomposite will replace the food grade ABS plastic in all of Tregren's products.
