UPM Formi for extrusion

With extrusion process objects of a fixed cross-sectional profile are created. A material is pushed through a die of the desired cross-section. Advantage of this process over other manufacturing processes is its ability to create very complex cross-sections. Another advantage is the possibility to work materials that are brittle because the material only encounters compressive and shear stresses. The surface finish is also excellent.

Main phases of extrusion:

  1. Raw materials and additives are transported through closed system to the extruders
  2. In the extruder raw materials are transported by rotating screw, and the melting is controlled by heating zones
  3. Melted plastic is pressed through a forming tool under high pressure achieving the final shape
  4. Rapid cooling of the product (air, water)
